"Working at Calke Abbey"
Good proximity to Calke Abbey and plenty of good eateries in town makes this a good place to stay. Local walking and interesting features. Only drawback was the airport and given the warm weather requiring an open window, night flights went on just past midnight. Otherwise an excellent stay and good value. Read less
Likes:
Friendly, efficient, room size was good and breakfast had all that I needed.
Dislikes:
Slightly noisy road and proximity to East Midlands airport - late night flights
Response from The Coach House:

Likes:
The beds were terrific. The set up was great: two parents in a good size bed in one room, and 3 young adult "children" in another room with 3 twin beds. The area was nice for them to take walks.
Dislikes:
The Swarkstone Bridge--it was so narrow and crooked, and we were white knuckled each time we had to drive it!
Response from The Coach House:
Thank you so much for your kind comments and review. Our English roads are very different from your USA roads and Swarkestone bridge does rate high on the "interesting" crossing list. Melbourne is of course worth the journey! Like the bridge it is very old and picturesque. Kind regards Beverley

Whether for business or leisure, a warm and friendly welcome awaits you at The Coach House, a popular AA 4 Star Guest House offering great value comfortable rooms, all with modern ensuite facilities. We have a number of ground floor rooms, free parking and free WiFi access. Enjoy a fabulous English breakfast plus cereals, fresh fruit & home made jams. Look out for our Weekend Discounts!

The Coach House is just out from the centre of historic Melbourne, a village with pretty houses, friendly people, lots of pubs and good restaurants, a supermarket and a good range of shops (including a great shoe shop!), all just a short level walk away. Melbourne Hall (open in August only) and Gardens (open April to September) was home to Queen Victoria's first Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, who gave his name to Melbourne in Australia. Browse round the Visitor Centre (open most days) where the Gift Shop and Estate Workshops provide a fine selection of unique gift ideas. Well worth a visit is the Parish Church, one of the finest in England and described as “a cathedral in miniature”, followed by a walk round Melbourne Pool (remember to feed the ducks!) and a visit to the Hall Tearooms. Thomas Cook was Melbourne born, and started his travel empire from here selling train excursion tickets.

Melbourne is easy to get to, just 6 miles from the M1 and M42 motorways and with excellent access to Derby, Nottingham and Donington Park. Melbourne is at the southern tip of The Peak District and in the central region of The National Forest, and is surrounded by Historic Houses such as Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall, Walking and Cycle Routes, great Shopping and fun family activities whatever the weather (ask us for a brochure with discount vouchers worth over £100). Nearby attractions include 3 stunning National Trust Estates (Calke Abbey, Kedleston Hall, and Sudbury Hall), Twycross Zoo, National Memorial Arboretum, Royal Crown Derby and Alton Towers.
