Much-maligned Slough in Berkshire is best known for the Slough Trading Estate and it’s true that many visitors staying in Slough hotels and B&Bs are travelling for work, not pleasure. But its close proximity to Windsor make it a great base for visiting the royal town and neighbouring Eton, both just a few minutes away by train, and Slough itself is undergoing much re-development which will see new green spaces, shopping and cultural facilities. William Herschell, who discovered Uranus, lived in Slough and had his Great Forty Foot Telescope (the largest in the world for 50 years) at Observatory House.
