Situated on the Cumbrian coast south of the Lake District, Barrow-in-Furness grew to prominence with iron and steel production and was once home to the world’s largest steelworks. Later it was a centre for ship building. The roots of the town can be found at Furness Abbey on the outskirts of the town, which was founded in 1123 and was once one of the wealthiest monasteries in the country. The sandstone ruins are a popular place to visit. Just offshore is Walney Island, with sandy beaches and two nature reserves, and tiny Piel Island, home to the ‘King of Piel’, otherwise known as the landlord of the island’s only pub.
