Guarding the border between England and Scotland, Carlisle began as a Roman town serving nearby Hadrian’s Wall. The squat walls of Carlisle Castle, built in 1092, once housed the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. It is now a museum and views extend from its ramparts to the Lake District and the Scottish lowlands. The cathedral is nearby, constructed in the 12th century from the same red sandstone.
The city is also home to the excellent Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, a family-friendly venue with hands-on exhibits and engaging activities. Spend a day or two in this great border city by staying in a Carlisle hotel or B&B.
