Bulleigh Barton Manor Informationen

Beschreibung

Bulleigh Barton Manor has three beautifully decorated rooms, with en-suite facilities, each one reflecting the historic nature of the house. The Brooking Room, with its hand made oak king size four poster bed and luxurious bathroom, is the original master bedroom. The light and airy Garden Suite offers a super king size double bed (or twin beds if preferred) and a separate living area in which to relax. The Willow Room is a double room with an ensuite shower room. All rooms have TV/DVD and tea and coffee making facilities. The owners are keen cooks and strong supporters of local food producers. Guests are greeted with a home made Devon cream tea which can be taken in the drawing room in front of the log fire on colder days or, when the weather is good, in the garden. Evening meals are available by prior arrangement and, for those who enjoy eating out, there is a good selection of local pubs and restaurants in the area. The house has a long history. There was a house noted on this site in the Doomsday book. It is thought that the current building, which was originally a farm house, dates back to the 1400s and was part of the Compton Castle estate. The earliest records we have been able to find show that it was sold by the Estate in 1688, possibly to pay off civil war debts. The purchaser, Thomas Brooking, son of the Mayor of Totnes, was a wealthy merchant. It is said that Thomas moved to the clean air of Bulleigh Barton to escape the plague which was raging in Totnes. The house stayed in the family for 200 years and has been visited by some of Thomas Brooking’s descendants in recent times. Bulleigh Barton is situated in a sheltered valley with extensive views across the garden and the surrounding countryside. Guests are welcome to make full use of the garden which features two ponds, an ancient well and a large swimming pool which is heated in the summer months.
