Your one stop cultural shop.
When it comes to culture, Edinburgh is your one stop shop. With
Christmas
markets, Hogmanay, Scottish food and drink and the Edinburgh Festival
there is always something going on.
An old, beautiful and bustling city surrounded by outstanding
countryside, it is bursting at the seams with history and every cobbled
stoned street has much waiting around the corner.
The Old and New Towns were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in
1995. With the Old Town being of medieval build and the New Town of
Georgian design, it is worth to look up and around
whilst exploring the streets.
Every year in August the city comes very alive for the Edinburgh
Festival combining multiple smaller festivals for 4 weeks of cultural
explosion. With everything covered from books to politics to jazz to
the Military Tattoo, there’s a festival for everyone.
The Hogmanay festival which happens over New Years Eve for 3 days gets
the new year started with a bang of bands, events and street parties.
If
you’re around on New Year’s Day make sure to check out the Loony Dook
where thousands of people every year take a dip in the practically
freezing river!
Walking around Edinburgh it is hard not to fall in love with the city.
The best sights will be the ones you discover yourself, but here are a
few to get you started.
Top 7 things to do in Edinburgh:- Edinburgh
Castle- Everywhere you stand in the city, the castle
seems to loom over. Sitting upon an extinct volcano, it is a critical
scene in much of Edinburgh and Scotland’s history. First references to
the castle are from AD 600. A trip to the city isn’t complete without
visiting the castle.
- Royal
Mile- One of the most famous streets in the world, the
Royal Mile is the historic heart of the city. It has the castle at the
top and the Holyrood Palace at the end. The street is packed with
churches, museums, cafes, restaurants, bars and old government
buildings.
- Palace
of Holyrood- The home of the Queen when in Edinburgh and
the home of Queen Mary of Scots. Another site of major importance to
Scotland’s history and of some turbulent events, it’s another must if
castles are your thing.
- Hogmanay-The
Scots know how to throw a party and at New Year’s Eve they show the
whole world how it’s done. The festival inherited from the Vikings
became a big celebration when Christmas was banned in Scotland for
around 400 years. New Years became the time that families would get
together and give presents. With fireworks set off from the castle,
it’s a party not to
miss!
- Ghost
tours- The vaults under the bridge were considered
uninhabitable, filled and their existence removed from public
record....which is slightly odd. Since being opened up 200 years later,
visitors have reported strange sightings and even taken strange photos.
They now are a site of high paranormal activity and many tour groups
are taken through the vaults, enter if you dare or for a thrill.
- Scotch
Whisky tasting- Edinburgh has many whisky bars to taste
some scotch. Ones to note are The Albannach, Whiski, Scotch Whisky
Experience, The Abbotsford and Leslies Bar.
- Quirky
shopping- Edinburgh’s streets and lanes are lined with
quirky shops selling clothes, antiques, knick knacks, tea, kilts, home
wares and fossils. Head to the creative area of Grassmarket which is
loved by students for its eclectic shops.
