The sumptuous Alnwick Castle is the main reason people flock to this Northumberland market town. It has been in the hands of the Percy family for 700 years, whose most famous son was the knight Sir Henry Percy, otherwise known as Sir Harry Hotspur. (The family at one time held lands in Tottenham, north London, hence the name of the Premier League football team!) Fans of another famous Harry will recognise the castle as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.
In recent years, the castle gardens have been restored and become a visitor attraction in their own right. Popular features include the Poison Garden and the giant Treehouse. While it isn’t possible to stay at the castle, visitors will find stately lodgings at nearby Alnwick B&Bs.
