A real shame to see this place decline

Good Morning
I made a booking to stay in a 2 bedroom cottage at Barclays house hotel this weekend, I used to own a holiday cottage complex just outside Looe, a few years back, so I knew all about the hotel and cottages. It used to have an excellent name so I didn’t think twice about booking it.
However on arrival I found the hotel and restaurant was closed (no mention of this on the website), there was no one there to meet us, so had to make phone calls to find out Read more

Good for a last minute break.

Not bad for the last minute price. Room okay, surprised at the random video player supplied. Heated pool was a nice surprise and may have used it if we planned a bit better. The road in to Looe was closed for vehicles and there was no warning of this on the website or on the phone, so directions to the hotel were wrong and instead of it being half a mile out of town, its a 7 mile detour. Fabulous Barclay House

We arrived at Barclay House to a very warm welcome. We were staying in Woodgate Cottage which was up a steep incline with a hair-pin bend but well worth the view at the top. The cottage was very clean, well equipped and quirky, just as we expected it to be. There was tea, coffee, milk, hot chocolate and biscuits waiting in the kitchen too....very welcome after a long journey. We slept very well and went home relaxed and happy with our stay. Read more

Delightful cottage with all the comforts of home plus a wonderful view from the high terrace.

The weather was OK, although not marvellous for August. Most of the time we managed to keep out of the rain, but due to the unseasonal chill in the air, we were not able to use the outdoor pool or sit on the hotel terrace. We did manage afternoon tea on our own terrace on the day we arrived, after than it was too chilly or wet. We were very comfortable in Trevillis and enjoyed two excellent dinners in the hotel restaurant. 'Trawlers' was perfect for lunch. We can also recommend 'The Sail Loft' Read more

Proximity to Looe town centre, friendly staff, good restaurant. We liked the fact that it had a gym & pool but did not get round to using either. Too cold for the pool & out too much to use the gym.
Dislikes?
The steps (73) back up to Trevillis were hard work after dinner & a bottle of wine!!! Plus the road you have to take up to the cottage car park, that required 1st gear round a hairpin bend - scary!!

Relaxing stay, beautiful location.

The hotel was lovely with friendly relaxed staff. We ate in the restaurant every morning and the breakfast was superb. The evening meal was absolutely amazing and although it was expensive it was worth every penny. The village is a brief stroll away, has several pubs/bars but little in the way of further adult entertainment. Which was superb for us as we just needed the rest! On the one rainy day we had we traveled to the Eden Project, brief 30 minute car journey but didnt do much sightseeing Read more

The hotel was very peaceful, had stunning views and the small distance from the village mean't we were able to get away and relax when needed. Service was excellent with staff making you feel at home.

2 nights break at the end of a 2 week family holiday. Late booking but suite available. We did get it at reduced rate but original rate would have been very expensive in comparison with similar hotels.

Barclay House; The perfect Hotel, in a perfect location.

A beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. I was met with a welcome like no other. This is without doubt the best hotel I have ever visited and I have travelled all over the UK. The hotel is draped with artwork and I spent a good hour looking around and enjoying the free show. We very much enjoyed our two pleasant days in a peaceful, charming setting.

Our friends dropped us off quite early, but the hotel was extremely obliging to give us our room the minute it was ready. Superb!

Friends of ours got engaged, and we were looking for a hotel to spend the night in that we could all remember the occassion by. The staff were very welcoming and accomodating. We were a group of 6, but only 4 of us stayed in the hotel, and they offered us a table of 6 together for breakfast the next day. There are personal touches - chocolates on the pillows, helpfulness with recommendations, flexibility on check-in and check-out times. Read more

Made to feel so welcome

I spend about 200 nights a year in hotels largely on business. Many are 5 start hotels but the service and the way we were made to feel welcome by your staff was better than most of the hotels I stay in.
Also really nice to have a freshly cooked breakfast rather than a buffet. Read more

Barclay House provided an excellent base for our relaxed 5-day Spring stay in Looe

The hotel has a light, airy, relaxed atmosphere and is well situated, overlooking the E. Looe river and near the centre - but it is more convenient and safer to drive, rather than walk, into the town. Our room, over the main entrance, was clean, well-furnished and well-heated, with excellent linen and towels, and of reasonable size. All members of the staff were most friendly and helpful. The menu options for dinner and breakfast were very good. The hotel provided good value for money comfort. Read more

Better than home from home!

Having stayed in many self-catering places over the years, we were impressed to find that everything had been taken care of in our 1 bedroom cottage even down to the provision of a tea towel and washing up liquid. The accommodation was exactly as described on the website and we enjoyed a winter's weekend cosied up indoors with the weekend papers and a drink to hand! Read more

Nice cottage, shame about the smell and the bed

The cottages haven't changed significantly since our first stay around seven years ago, and they have been kept in pretty good decorative order.
There were two things that let the cottage down, though. There was a persistent smell like the smell of wet dog downstairs. I did mention it to the staff, but felt that they really couldn't be bothered to help. Also, the bed was very poor - Twin mattresses pushed together without a topper leaves an uncomfortable ridge and gap. Really unimpressive. Read more

Splendid staff but very expensive given the facilities on offer.

Having just come (the night before) from a superb B&B in Fowey, costing just £50 per night, the contrast was marked. Barclay House is very expensive given the fact the rooms aren't well decorated and the walls are very thin. We didn't have a car with us and the walk up the busy hill from the station was perilous (and there were no signs or information on the path which would have cut off some of the dangerous road section). Overall, we were very disappointed. Read more

Woodgate Cottage-very overpriced, I do not consider this cottage luxury 5*, would not stay again.

Woodgate cottage-overpriced at £899,especially as listed as 'luxury 5 star'.
Doesn't comfortably sleep 6 people.
Rollaway bed is a folding bed with thin mattress, didn't even sleep my 3yr old on for 1 week.
Dining table seats 5, sofa's seat 5.
Main bathroom minor issues eg.bath taps stick on/off,shower overflows, bare wires on radiator.
Kitchen not brilliantly equiped, basic items missing.
Some windows don't lock (toddlers)
However, clean and tidy, beautiful setting with excellent barbecue. Read more

Shame the road into Looe contains a short walk where there is no pavement, and the road is narrow and busy. Didn't want to risk taking a toddler along there, so had to drive into Looe each day.

Description

Hello and welcome to Barclay House! Hotel rooms, restaurant and self catering holiday cottages in Looe, Cornwall. Barclay House - our home & yours for the duration of your stay, short or long - we aim to please! Barclay House lies on the edge of Looe, a historic Cornish fishing village dating from the 12th century. Carved into the hillside overlooking the East Looe river, this six acre property has breathtaking views over the water and countryside beyond, yet we are only 10 minutes walk from the town, harbour, beach & sea. Originally built around 1890 as a Victorian family villa of uncompromising architecture, this wonderful 11 bedroom house has a spacious elegance & magnificent relaxed air about it. We are captivated daily by its fabulous position and the ever changing scenery. Located on the ground floor of the house are the AA Rosette award winning restaurant, cosy lounge bar and sitting room complete with panoramic terrace overlooking the water (when the tide is in, that is!) Drinks are served al fresco when possible - what better way to see the sun go down than enjoying a glass of local Camel Valley wine whilst perusing our daily changing menu on our terrace? - the only problem will be what to choose!! You may perhaps enjoy relaxing by the pool nestled in a suntrap or enjoy some peace in our gardens and woodland. All our rooms have everything you could possibly wish for - complete with those superb views - many of which are of the river! Our luxury cottages which have spectacular River Views enjoyed from your very own terrace and balcony - are fully equipped with everything you might need including ensuite bathrooms (most master bedrooms with jacuzzi style spa baths!); fully fitted kitchen - right down to your very own garden shed and barbecue!!

The ground floor is accessible for wheelchair users (bar, restaurant, lounge and WC.) We have a disabled-friendly ground floor annexe en - suite double room which also benefits from having its own parking space. Please note that 7 of our cottages are only accessable via steps - one cottage (Woodgate - a three bedroom cottage) is accessable directly from the cottage car park and is on the level. The reserved parking space is right by the garden gate. From the ground floor there are 5 steps to the kitchen level off which there is a single en-suite room. A further five steps lead up to the twin and double rooms - both of which are en-suite but in line with the unique split level design of these wonderful cottages, there are a further 5 steps to each of the en-suite bathrooms.
