The perfect getaway

We had a wonderful time at Foxghyll - the House is very comfortable, warm, brightly lit, very well kept and extremely quiet. We were warmly welcomed and given alot of guidance from Paul Mann (the owner) about treks, restaurants, routes, etc. The rooms are warm, well furnished and very private with a view onto the garden which is really lovely. Staying in such a lovely, well kept and treasured property added to the enjoyment of our short break. We will definitely go back. Read more

Beautiful house in a lovely location

Although the local council had left the "Road Closed" signs in the road to our B&B, we were glad we persevered and found a beautiful house in a lovely quiet location. We were met by two chihuahuas that my wife wanted to adopt straight away. Paul made us very welcome showing us around. The house has lots of fascinating items that show it is also someone's home. We attempted the wooden puzzles on the dining room tables each morning, but failed miserably. Read more

We chose Foxghyll Country House as a base for walking Ambleside and surrounding area. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the accommodation; cleanliness was first class, and being an older property with thick walls it was very quiet. Read more

Most enjoyable . Having stayed in a number of accomodations in the Lake district in recent years this was a little gem of a find and would probably come close to being our favourite . Only disappointment was that we only stayed 1 night would have loved to stay longer Read more

A luxurious break in beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

My friend and I had a large, light, airy room with a view of the front garden and direct access to the back garden and the fell. The bathroom was enormous with a spa bath and all the comfort we could wish for and to crown it all there was a second toilet and shower just next door in case of need. Read more

First class home from home

My wife and I have stayed at Foxghyll many times over the last 21 years and it is now run by the son of the original proprietors. Foxghyll is a small country house with lots of character and history (once owned by Thomas de Quincey) and is set in beautifully kept gardens. It is positioned within a short country walk (complete with stream) of Ambleside yet feels reassuringly removed from the town. We have always enjoyed details to visitor comfort at Foxghyll and this continues. Read more

Response

Thank you for your kind review, we're so glad you enjoyed your stay here. Would just like to clarify regarding the negative comment, that the en-suite bathroom with this particular room is a spa / corner bath. Therefore there is a private shower-room adjacent to this room, apologies if this was not pointed out to you during your stay. Thank you once again.

A Near-Perfect B&B Experience

Foxghyll Country House is everything a good B&B should be - a quiet, cosy little place in picturesque surroundings with clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds, well-cooked breakfasts and the friendliest owner imaginable. Initially, we found it a little awkward to find, being somewhat apart from the town centre. But once found, its location became a strength - it is really quiet, has a wonderful garden and is very close to Rydal Mount and Loughrigg Fell. Couldn't recommend it more. Read more

Idylic setting in a fantastic country house

Set along a country lane, we found this amazing house that turned out to be our B&B. Paul gave us a very warm welcome and were shown to our spa room with door to very pretty garden where we had a glass of wine with fantastic views. Ambleside just 20 mins walk, with boat trips across the lake to the vintage motor museum. We would recommend this B&B to anyone coming to the Lakes. Read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Only one fault, the place smelt of cigarette smoke which was fairly unpleasant and would be the reason not to stay again. It was the downstairs reception area and landing, not a good advert. Our room was absolutely fine though. Read more

Description

FoxGhyll Country House B&B, located 5 mins from Ambleside, on the historic literary road of Under Loughrigg. Originally built in the 1600’s in the style of a typical old Lakeland farmhouse, Foxghyll has undergone a diverse and colourful history. Having once had the famous writer, author and literary figure Thomas De Quincy as a tenant for a short time. The house was later occupied by the Hon. WE. Forster. MP for the borough of Bradford, and the first minister of education. It was during this time in the 1870’s that extensive additions were added in the decorative & imaginative style of an affluent Regency country house. Offering guests a peaceful and tranquil setting, yet all within easy access to Ambleside and all the amenities the village has to offer. In a 10-15 minute walk, or 5 minute drive from Ambleside town centre, you will find FoxGhyll Country House B&B. By the banks of the River Rothay. Set amongst a formally laid, 3-acre garden and with direct access onto Loughrigg Fell itself. During the Spring and Summer months, Foxghyll’s private and secluded garden comes to life with a vast and varied array of plant and shrub life. The small stream that runs through the grounds, provides tranquility and composure to the residence. With excellent views of the Lakeland fells, guests can gain easy access to Loughrigg and the Fells and valleys beyond, from the garden itself. From land adjoining the River Rothay, Foxghyll can also boast private fishing. Foxghyll’s driveway also offers easy & accessible private parking.
