It was a great pleasure to stay at the Old Hall.

We had only booked for one night, but they were able to take us for the previous night as well, putting us up in a small self catering cottage at no extra charge. During our two days there all the staff without fail were efficient, friendly and helpful. Read more

self catering cottage at old hall inn

We stopped for 2 nights in the cottage which is opposite the Papermill Inn and just down the road from the Old Hall Inn. We ate breakfast and evening meal at the Old Hall and found the food to be excellent.

The cottage was well appointed and big enough for a family of up to 4. My father stopped in the Old Hall and was very pleased with the standard of his room.

We enjoyed the break and would hope to return. Read more

Thank you for the review, we are delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay. Paper and kindling are ordinarily provided, it was an oversight that they weren't, my apologies for this. Some would have been provided on request, we are even happy to pop over and light the fire for our guests, as we understand many guests are not familiar with lighting open fires. Thanks again for the recomendation, and we hope to see you again soon. Dan

Excellent food at the Old hall Inn.
Good selection of bottled beers at Old Hall Inn.

Would have liked a full starter pack of fuel for the open fire - there were some logs but no firelighters, kindling/paper or coal.

Wonderful, out of the way location yet an ideal base for seeing the entire area!

We received a warm welcome for our three-night stay while attending a 'Derbyshire' motorcycle/car trials event. Our rooms were in the adjoining Paper Mill, superbly comfy, cosy rooms with bar and snacks downstairs - and across the road to the
Old Hall for great meals and an enormous range of beers and drinks!! What cheerful staff at breakfast and usually in the evenings at the bar - though perhaps a couple need further training about the beverages available. :) Read more

Thank you for the review and for the feedback. We are about to start a revamp of the en-suite to further improve the facilities and the showers will be part of that. Cereals however is an easier one to fix, and i've requested a bigger selection going forward. Thanks again for the great review and i'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay.

The room was very spacious, the bed was comfortable and there was a nice balcony. We enjoyed the food in the restaurant and sampling the beers. The inn was very attractive inside and outside.

A more powerful shower would make it even better, but it was not a major problem and we enjoyed having a bath as well as a shower. More choice of cereals at breakfast would also be a plus.

Lovely room, people, food and stay.

Very impressed with the quality of the food. Room was lovely and light and clean. Could be tricky for light sleepers as it was noisy with the bar below but didn't affect our stay at all. Read more

Response

Thank you for the review. For information, this guest stayed at the Paper Mill, where the rooms are directly above the bar area, and during busy weekends, noise can be heard from below. It was a member of staff who had turned 21, the average age of the event was considerably more as the guest list was made up of local families. We don't accept 18th / 21st parties etc as a rule. Bar closes at midnight at weekends and 11pm midweek.

We`ve been meaning to visit for a while - Shouldn`t have waited so long!

Stayed overnight between Christmas and New Year in the Papermill small double. Arrived early so had to try a couple of the local ales while the room was prepared! Room size was more than ample with all mod cons. Spent a couple of hours walking and later, ate in the pub as the Minstrels gallery was unavailable. Fish and Steak were both to our liking, as was the wine. A good nights sleep followed by a hearty breakfast left us needing another long walk. Already planning our next visit. Read more

Warm & friendly B&B

We chose this B&B as it was CAMRA recommended. On arrival we were quickly shown to our room which was warm and comfortable. The en-suite had a bath, which after a long walk up Kinder Scout, was most relaxing. We ate every evening and it was good to know that in a busy pub, the staff ensured we had our own table. My wife and I were looking for a quality venue in the Peaks & somewhere we had not stayed before following busy periods in our working lives for a short break.. although we would be walking we also wished a comfortable base with good food and comfortable surroundings. We found it all! Great food, comfortable room in an excellent location. The staff were welcoming and always happy to help. We ate well, slept well and felt relaxed. Read more

Characteristic ambiance, felt very welcome

We stayed for one week and had a lovely fresh cooked meal almost every night.
Nice collection of wines of-course they have ales and ciders as well but we sticked to the wines. They are always very helpful. From the B&B you can make some nice walks and Edale and Castleton are just 15 min. by car. From there you can make some beautiful walks trough the Peak District. We stayed in room 4 which has a small balcony but is above the kitchen, so you do wake up with the smell of bacon and eggs. Read more

Thank you for the review. We didn't realise it was your Anniversary, so a belated happy returns. Just so anyone reading the review gets an accurate perspective on prices we charge £3 for standard lagers, £2.60 for bitter and premium lagers like bitburger we charge £3.50. Champagne starts at £35 / bottle for Baron de Beaupre (which we think is much better than Moet). We are quite a bit cheaper than all our local competitors, and we strive to offer value. Dan

The room was very pleasant, with full facilities, the location and the view only slightly less so after perusing the web site. Good, adequate parking, pleasant staff, excellent range of ales.

The push-pull sink plug wasn't working. This was our 46th wedding anniversary - fancied champagne, but Moet Extortionately priced! Ordered Bakewell Tart well in advance -

Nice place, good food and ale

This was a rare break for my husband and I and in truth I was hoping for roaring log fires and soft leather sofas and did not find this. The Inn is well situated for walkers and the atmosphere was relaxed enough although staff were a little rushed at times in the evenings. The food was very nice, although my medium steak was definitely well done. Surprised the food is not rated in any guides because I think it's worth recognition. The staff were eager to please . The room was clean and comfy . Read more

Response

Thank you for the review, we are delighted to hear you believe the food to be worth recognition. We do have a roaring log fire stove in the minstrels gallery which is keep in all winter, and as a rule the Old Hall is found to be very warm & cosy, especially because it is often so busy. I'm sorry in this instance you found it to be chilly at times. Due to the layout of this small couching inn, we are only able to accommodate one leather sofa, which is in the bar area.

Likes?
Nicely situated. Room was quiet at night and comfortable. Ale was lovely and food was good standard pub grub.
Dislikes?
A little chilly in the pub at times. Would have preferred something more intimate and cosy but the Inn does not profess to be that so that was my mistake.

The Inn was very clean and staff helpful and friendly,in a very nice location. But the pub itself was very, very busy, and designed for eating meals, the furniture and fittings are very uncomfortable, hard wooden benches and chairs ,not good for a relaxing evening, more of a

Thank you for your review, and the high scores. We have never received any comments before regarding the furniture and we are sorry to hear you found it uncomfortable. Should you be thinking of joining us for one of our beer festivals (2 each year) you will have to call to book a room as room availability is taken offline during these weekends so residents don't mistakenly book a room during these two very busy weekends. There great fun with over 100 beers and ciders on hand pull at the next one in September.

Excellent Country Pub / Hotel

We went for one day and found this to be the perfect country pub - B&B. The place was a lovely quaint ye old worlde pub style and the staff were very friendly. The food was excellent quality, great value, and there were plenty of beers to choose from after a long days walk. The location was great and very close to the station and within great walking routes. Finally, the breakfast the next day was worth the stay alone!! Read more

Hi thank you for your review. The mattress in room 4 was a tempur mattress which do tend to feel firmer. My only complaint would be about the bed - room 4 - mattress was rock hard which isn't usually a problem, but it had also moulded over time so it had a dip in the middle which made it uncomforable.

Hi,thank you for your kind review. Three of our rooms are above the old inn, and therefore you will hear the buzz of people downstairs as we do get very busy. We do maintain a very courteous approach to noise however, especially when people are leaving the premises at closing time. We are surrounded by two great hills for walking on both sides of the valley, both of which are easily accessible by foot, we are however in the centre of Whitehough hamlet, which is itself a conservation area.

Not a lot obviously! Some rooms are above the bar or kitchen, so there is some noise until closing time, but hey, it is a pub! Website makes it look like it's in the middle of rolling fields, it isn't

Response

thank you for taking the time to review our inn. I'm sorry to hear not everything was as you hoped. We do take a very informal approach when compared to city hotels. We are keen to manage expectations correctly when attracting new guests, and don't want to form any allusions that we have the same facilities that one would find in a larger hotel. We are famed locally for the quality of our food and local ales. Our menu is purposefully kept small and a portion of it is traditional, hearty pub fare.

Friendly greetings and service throughout our stay from every member of staff we met. Room was spacious, spotlessy clean, tastefully and freshly decorated, super soft fluffy towels and plenty of hot water, it was perfect in every way. The evening meal was delicious. Excellent customer service, food and comfort made a relaxing break.

We had a relaxing, away from it all weekend, in a B&B with character & comfort, great food, location chosen so we could easily drive to nearby countryside for walks. Customer service was excellent, all staff were very friendly, helpful, attentive, well organised, and went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied with evcery aspect of our stay. Whilst having good modern facilities, the coal fire & stone firplace, wooden beams and staircase also add a feel of historical olde worlde England. Read more

Thank you for your kind review. We have put alarm clocks in all of the rooms on the back of your comments, these are not illuminated however as some find it a distraction when trying to sleep, but are next to the bedside lamp.

You made a valid comment about booking a table, if you plan on eating at the Old Hall it is best to book a table for the evening. We try to be very flexible for all our customers, but especially residents, and we can flex the time if you are unsure on plans etc

Very friendly winter wonderland

We went to the Old Hall for 3 nights just before Christmas and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. The staff were fantastic, very friendly and always ready to help even to the point of digging the car out of the snow. Breakfast was very generous with a good choice and the pub's food was beautiful we recommend the sticky toffee pud.
The room was perfectly clean and very comfortable with a good ensuite bathroom.
We arrived in deep snow and the scenery was fantastic, great walking. Read more

We can't guarantee the snow (with some relief, i might add!). Check out the winter photo's on our website (on the events page), the snow was exceptional this year and some residents captured some of their snow adventures. Thank you for your comments, hope to see you again soon. (tv remote has been found & light switch replaced)

I have stayed in the Old Hall twice now. The rooms are very comfortable and quiet. The location is great for a base to Manchester or into the hills. Read more

A relaxing and friendly Inn with excellent food and drink.

We decided at the last minute to get away for our anniversary, the Old Hall Inn was just a like the look of choice from the internet. As we only had one night to spare it was about the right distance from Wolverhampton, where we live. We were really pleased with the choice, the room was lovely, food was fresh and well presented, with staff friendly and helpful. We would definately recommend this Inn. Read more

Glad you enjoyed your stay. We are continually improving our facilities, and the rooms recieve regular updates/re-decoration. On the next refresh we plan to install mirror lighting in the bathrooms as well as other improvements. We are pretty good at keeping the website up to date, so checking the photos etc on there will give you an accurate idea of how the facilities look. Thanks for your comments.

The mattress was broken, i'm disapointed that we had not spotted it before your stay, however it was difficult to notice without actually spending any time on it. The matress was replaced the next day and we are grateful to you for having brought it to our attention. We have spend quiet a bit of time on the subject of matresses. Its such a personal thing and we welcome feedback on this especially as we replace our matresses regularly and are keen to ensure that we have the type that suits most.

Excellent accommodation with fantastic staff.

The most impressive aspect of the Old Hall Inn is the friendliness of the staff - they are extremely welcoming and made our stay very comfortable. The facilities are excellent and very clean. Breakfast is cooked to your requirements and the food is delicious. We ate in the Inn every evening because the food was freshly made and inexpensive. The quality of food was very high. Read more

Fresh air and fine food.

We booked the Old Hall Inn to celebrate my partners birthday and to get some quality time without the kids for a couple of nights. The Inn is ideally located for exploring the local area with most attractions a short drive away. There are also some nice walks around the village and towards Chapel en le Frith. If your looking for a very good quality pub, good food in a quiet location this is the one for you!!!! Read more

I'm glad you discovered some of the great walks straight from the Inn, good for walking off the over indulgence the night before. I'm sorry that the welcome wasn't as you'd hoped, i'm especially disappointed as we pride ourselves on the friendlyness our staff. We are a busy country Inn, and as we don't have a reception (as we only have 4 rooms) the bar can seem a little busy, however we should have taken the time to explain breakfast etc and i'm sorry that in this instance this didn't happen.

Great location, good room, great breakfast, well worth a visit!

If you want to get away from it all, enjoy walking and the outdoors then the Old Hall is the place to be. Graet location in the North Peak with lots of great walks and places, things to do.
Family run, friendly staff that make you feel very welcome, good real ales and a very good restaurant, superb steak and kidney pud and chocolate fondent to die for!
The rooms are very tasteful clean and tidy, internet accesss hit and miss due to poor signal.
The breakfast is fabulous and so is the Old Hall Read more

Thank you for your comments and we are delighted to you enjoyed your stay. The wireless internet is a bit hit & miss in the rooms due to the thickness of the walls in this 16th Century building. To resolve this problem we have installed internet sockets in the rooms so a cable can be used (free access). The wireless in the bar area should be problem free.

We have an access to the rooms (24/7) via the garden , avoiding the need to come though the bar (which can be busy).

Contemporartily quaint with modern tastes set in traditional values

What joy to find nestled in Derbyshire was the Old Hall Inn with a warm, welcoming feel that catered for the individual. No request was too small or large to be met by staff that were attentive yet not 'pushy'. Plenty of 'things to do' locally but our stay was too short to accomplish all. We will go back! Read more

The Saturday Times placed the Old Hall at number 7 in the weekend pull out '30 great pubs for summer' as selected by Alastair Sawday. Its busy restaurant & ale trade spills into the adjacent Elizabethan Minstrels Gallery making the Old Hall a truly unique place to stay. The menu changes daily as our chefs prepare from fresh every day, using local produce from the best suppliers and farms. Our menu is kept small, but gives a choice of traditional pub food along with more gourmet choices if you fancy something special. Its fresh, simple, great value and we hope you’ll agree, delicious. SCOTLAND The Paper Mill Inn has recently been acquired by the owners of the Old Hall Inn and undergone a full and extensive refurbishment, offering a further 4 en-suite rooms. The Paper Mill Inn is located just across the road from the Hall, and breakfast is served in the Minstrels Gallery with all our other guests. The Paper Mill Bar is open in the evenings and all day at weekends, and offers more ales, more world beers and live sports, in a cosy bar with open fires, flag floors and a warm welcome. We hope to welcome you soon...

All our guest rooms are on the second floor. Although we have installed handrails on stairs, due to the age of Whitehough Hall and its grade II listing, the doors remain narrow in places and not suitable for wheelchair access.
