Friendly and relaxed, a home away from home

The staff were friendly and helpful from the outset, showing us to our room and explaining about access and the breakfast arrangements. We had an evening meal on Friday night which was really enjoyable and both of us enjoyed our stay. So much so, that we are looking at rebooking and coming back in November for my partner's birthday. The room was quiet and comfortable; the bar was cozy and had a lovely atmosphere. I would definitely recommend The Oak to others. Read more

Nicely furnished comfortable rooms

A comfortable, attractive room with lots of nice, thoughtful little touches. The bathroom is brand new, with shelves in all the right places, plus great hot water and good quality towels. There's also wifi in the bedroom, decent cupboard space and enough hangers, and even a tray for your walking boots.
My room had a double bed, which was fine for just me but would have been on the small side for a couple. Read more

Local Inn with modern and clean accomodation

One night stopover on the way to Plymouth. Great beer, steak and a comfortable, clean and well appointed room. Read more

Response

Regretfully this is the one room that can be affected by the noise outside. This is not up from the floor which is heavily soundproofed but via the large original sash windows. We have put heavy curtains up and usually noise is not a problem as we are generally a quiet pub where people come to socialise. Occasionally however we have an event that is louder than normal. Glad you had your ear plugs!

Unfortunately I was above the bar and it was noisy until the bar closed. Thankfully I never travel without my trusty earplugs!

Apologies for the delay in replying - my computer will not allow me to see reviews and the web provider for this page has just managed to sort so that I can go online to read and reply. We have put memory foam mattresses in all our double rooms so I am surprised that you found it too hard - I chose the ones that are supposed to be best for backs as recommended by the experts.

How a quality English Inn should be

It is very refreshing to encounter a place that lives up to it's advertising. The Oak is the result of the hard work put in by it's owners, Carol & Andrew. Every aspect of it exceeds expectation, from the plush decoration of the rooms to the immaculate presentation and cleanliness. Andrew is clearly a talented chef and this shows in the quality of his food. The overall attention to detail is what makes this head & shoulders above any other Inn we have stayed in. Read more

Nice pub, very nice room, but felt like I was imposing a bit...

It was a one night stay to visit friends. The room was very nice and very clean and a good match for what we needed. Both the 10.30am check out time and 9.30am end of breakfast seemed a little early compared with most other places I have stayed and perhaps a little unnecessarily constraining. My only real criticism is that the B&B side of things feels like an after-thought to generate money rather than a business venture that the owners are passionate about. They seem happiest behind the bar. Read more

Response

Sorry for the delay replying - I have just found out how to do so. I am sorry you felt that you were imposing - this is a pub and we work extremely long hours, we love our work but sometimes the lack of sleep catches up with us. We can usually tell which guests just want their own company and which would enjoy a chat - sometimes we get this wrong -possibly because of the tiredness and for that I am sorry - if you check all our reviews you will see that we are not perfect but we do try our best.

22/10/2010. Thank you for your comments. We have now been able to alter the alarm system and entrance to the bedrooms so that people staying in the guest accommodation have an independent access to the building and can come and go as they please, without worrying about access times or setting the pub alarms off.

Decent but expensive

Nothing wrong with the place.probably a touch expensive for what it is. The food was pricy and the quality was iffy, having said that when the fish was sent back (it was rank) it was changed without a problem. Service was adequate but a little distant. Read more

Response

Occasionally things go wrong and all we can do is try to rectify the problem. Yes, the fish was not up to our usual standard but we did try to put things right. However, some of the other comments are, we feel, unfair. Unfortunately, when something is not right it is human nature to 'look' for other problems. Please read our other reviews and make up your own mind about the usual standard of what we provide. This is a family business and we are human too, but that is also part of the charm.

Excellent pub, rooms just refitted and very comfortable, good ales, great imaginative food with massive portions, folk musicians on the Wednesday were very good and not intrusively loud.
Dislikes?
No view from the Master room, but that is just an irrelevant quibble really.

First outside impression completely blown away by the very friendly welcome.

Our stay was for my birthday and the atmosphere in the pub gave me the impression that everyone was celebrating with me. The childrens' folk evening helped the party mood. The food at both dinner and breakfast, was just delicious. A little haven of great food and friendly people made my birthday perfect. Read more

Thank you for your feedback. You will be pleased to hear that the suggested paint job has been done and the outside is looking much smarter, especially now the window boxes and hanging baskets are in place. Improved signage is also on the agenda soon. Many thanks again.

The outside did not give a good impression and also having a mobility problem I found the stairs a little daunting with the low handrail.

Clean and friendly with great food!

Very good quality bed and breakfast pub. Clean, functional room, the bathroom was like new which is an important point for us as there's nothing worse than a grubby looking bathroom. Flat screen tv and tea/coffee making facilities led to a very pleasant stay. Not forgetting the restaurant food which was excellent. Great breakfasts too! Read more

Impressed by value for money and quality and cleanliness of rooms. Food excellently cooked and serv

The external aspect of The Royal Oak belies the ambience of the bar and the high quality and cleanliness of the rooms. The owners did everything possible to make our stay a real pleasure. There are many special offers available and folk music on some evenings. The very reasonably priced food was excellently cooked and presented and the beers were excellent too, as the pub has CAMRA accreditation. Best of all - no TVs in the bar! Read more

Description

Following our refurbishment completed in July 2008, we now have 5 brand new ensuite, sound insulated bedrooms, of which 3 are double and 2 are twin. All our rooms are furnished to a high standard with solid pine furniture, tastefully decorated with magnolia walls and neutral carpets, yet each is individually finished by Carol with it's own unique colour scheme, brought together with the thoughtful co-ordination of the soft furnishings. Recently inspected by the English Tourist Council we are very pleased to have been awarded 4 stars for the standard of our establishment. We have also been awarded a silver award making us one of the top inns in the South West. This achievement not only reflects the standard of the accommodation, but also the rest of the building, food and service. You can be assured of a restful and relaxing stay with us. We hope we have thought of everything needed to make your stay as comfortable as possible, there are hair dryers, alarm clocks, digital TV's, fans, tea & coffee making facilities and many other thoughtful additions. All the rooms are located on the first floor and are sound insulated to keep any noise from the rest of the building to an absolute minimum. Indeed, even with our extrovert quiz master on the microphone (quizzes are held on the first Thursday of each month) we are assured that our guests rest has been undisturbed! Now in the Michelin Eating out in pubs guide 2011 - one of only 530 pubs to make it into this guide based on our food - you can't pay to get into this guide.

All of our rooms are on the first floor access by stairs.
