Christine met us at the door, and her welcome was warm and genuine

We read a little from the interesting selection of books in the room, then relaxed by the log fire in the lounge. We had been lucky enough to arrange the, (not always available), evening meal - cooked specially for us. It was delicious. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast included produce from the adjacent farm. Utterly fantastic!!!!!

We have stayed in so many b and bs, pubs, hotels etc over the years for both work and leisure and nowhere has been a patch on Burnopside Hall! A beautiful home, with the highest standard of fixtures and fittings. It was clear that great thought had been put into EVERY aspect of staying there. Christine Harmer must be the best landlady ever -we just didn't want to leave!!!! Read more

Fantastic week-end break in beautiful surroundings

We were pleasantly surprised when we were shown to our room, compared to other accommodation we have stayed in it was enormous. When we looked outside we had a beautiful outlook over the extensive gardens. We were also well located to visit Beamish only a short distance away and there were lovely restaurants in nearby Lanchester. Read more

wonderful break in welcoming, clean and comfortable property set in beautiful setting.

although the hall was beautifully and authentically furnished we were made to feel very relaxed and conformable. The place was spotlessly clean and every need catered for. We were even permitted to bring a bottle back and consume it in front of the open fire in the gorgeous lounge. Read more

Look no further for a stay near Durham

We were met by Christine and Maxy who showed us to our room and gave us fresh milk for tea on arrival (very thoughtful). I cannot fault any part of our stay. Our room was lovely. We had a nice outlook. Parking in front of the building and a fresh breakfast the following morning (some fruit may have been from the Hall's garden). Read more

The best B & B accommodation we have ever enjoyed; our weekend stay was superb.

We were in Durham to sing the cathedral's weekend services having been at our cottage in the Lakes, so we had our Labrador with us. This was no problem - Christine, the owner, looked after Sam for 2 days who enjoyed having free access to the house and gardens accompanied by Max, her own Spaniel! As for us, the attention to detail ensured our absolute comfort with fresh milk served morning & afternoon for tea/coffee to a chess game near the roaring log fires & full-size billiard table next door Read more

The fresh milk twice a day, the breakfasts, especially the fresh fruit and homemade sausages (they keep their own pigs)
The reception areas especially the billiard room!
generosity in every respect

Absolutely nothing - our stay was faultless;
we were encouraged to treat the place as our own; The owner could not have done any more to make us feel more at home. Spode china everywhere - wonderful!

An absolute gem tucked away from the world.....

This was our second visit to Burnhopeside and it was every bit as lovely as the first. We took the attic apartment which was as comfortable, tasteful, clean and well appointed as the hotel bedrooms. This one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. One feels immediately at home and the comfort and attention to detail is superb. The grounds are beautiful and the location is perfect for trips into Durham or for walks in the surrounding countryside. The fact it is dog-friendly is a huge bonus. Read more

Wow!

We stayed for 2 nights in the Double Ensuite room. Christine was so lovely, welcoming and really helpful throughout our stay. She was also keen for us to make use of the stunning snooker table and the piano!
The grounds were stunning- could walk for miles, and the pigs were lovely! Would have loved to stay for longer to explore all the grounds.
It was such a relaxing and blissful stay- a wonderful place to feel away from the world and to enjoy.

Description

Burnhopeside Hall is a GradeII* listed building of Historical interest, having been the home of William Hedley, Engineer. A working model of his "Puffing Billy" railway engine is at Beamish Museum (5 miles North). The original can be seen in the Science Museum in London. The Country House provides a beautiful setting for a peaceful & relaxing stay for business or holiday travellers. It is surrounded by 18 acres of gardens and woodland, which merge with the Estate's farmland and woodland, providing 475 acres of private areas for walking and cycling and 3/4 mile of river. The Farm rears outdoor free range pigs, chickens, ducks and geese. A Walled Garden built in 1893 provides produce for the house, so that most of what is provided in the house is home grown or reared. The property is heated by biomass boilers using wood chip, which within 12 months will be supplied from our own woodlands. The property is warm and comfortable throughout the year, with traditional open log fires in all downstairs rooms. The four bedrooms are large and comfortable with super king double beds, traditional furniture and modern en-suite bathrooms. Breakfast is served in the dining room around a large circular table seating 8 people or can be enjoyed in your bedroom. The top floor of the Hall offers a self catering apartment. This is somewhere to stay when you want to escape to the country but not be too far from the town. We are located 6.5 miles west of Durham City,a World Heritage Site and Newcastle & Gateshead are 16 miles north. They offer excellent restaurants,The Sage & Theatre Royal.Hadrian's Wall is an easy distance and there are a number of local golf courses in the surrounding area. On the Estate, we can stable your horses, kennel your dogs and provide shooting days. A number of good hunting packs are within driving distance and on our doorstep. We can arrange walking with birds of prey. We offer something rather different and want you to enjoy your stay.
