Like staying the night at a Weatherspoons

The staff were generally very helpful, bar one lady who did not really seem bothered - certainly needs a career change! Breakfast consisted of very poor quality produce, Richmond style sausages with some items being cold, clearly all microwaved upon request. However, this all went down well with the hangover, so not entirely bad at the time. They do need to invest in a toaster that takes less than 30 mins to produce warm bread though. Read more

adequate for the price

On arrival young man came to reception but with no real welcome.I found room nd was slightly underwhelmed by look and ripped net curtains.
The shower was wonderful after my long journey.Hairdryer seen better days.
Unable to connect to WiFi even another man on reception could not get it for me on my tablet.
Squeaky floor woke me up with the busy landing at 6am
Breakfast was very nice.
Overall I had a lovely sleep in the very comfortable bed and would just say those few things need attention. Read more

A no-frills low cost stay

We stayed at the hotel for two nights in order to attend a family birthday celebration. We needed relatively low cost accommodation. Whilst the service was adequate, there were areas of the hotel which were rather tired and the whole thing needed tweaking into a slightly higher quality level. Read more

Response

Thank you for your review. We are updating the premises after a fire caused by a discarded cigeratte that had been smoked out of a
bedroom window. The paint off the hand rail is from the hoses that were dragged through the whole hotel in order to put out the fire which took the roof off one side of the building. We have a schedule of works to include all the paintwork and bathrooms. The tables and chairs are put out every morning for the guests to sit outside the front of the hotel.

Likes?
Reasonable cost B&B for 2 per night. The hotel is central to Baldock and has been nicely designed. The room was quiet, and the shower had good water pressure. Bar are decor is good.
Dislikes?
The staff rather thin on the ground and lacking in any real warmth. The bar and restaurant was almost empty. The painted stair rails needed cleaning and repainting, floors creaked. Breakfast was poor.

Excellent location, good hotel but rooms a little too warm

We stayed to visit relatives living in Baldock. The location of the hotel was excellent, staff service was fine. The only issues was temperature in the room and especially the carvery. The Carvery food was not so good. Parking would have been an issue if one of our party did not have a disabled badge Read more

Response

I hope that you will try our carvery again. We only opened on 17th March and we were still learning to improve. The aircon is now working again and a our new meat supplier is consistant with quality. Hotel room heating can be controlled via the radiator thermostats
as this is difficult to judge for everyones comfort. Thank you for comments on the staff , it is appreciated.

Room temperature and temperature in the carvery room. Carvery food was not so good (we ate on Saturday 5th April) - gammon was too salty.

You came to stay with us as we were changing from Greek to Carvery so I agree the bar was limited while we were working on the area. New layout disruped wifi but Templars wifi is all sorted and available free of charge to our customers. Lovely due to upgrade but cold and poor staff

When we arrived we had a twin room instead of a double, and the staff were efficient, upgrading us to the best room in the hotel with a four poster bed which was much warmer than our first room also. However, we didn't get told about the hen party at the hotel, with music until 1am! At breakfast, we had to ask for our order to be taken, and then waited 20 minutes for it to arrive. There was also inconsistency with fresh/tinned tomatoes. The staff need training and general cleanliness was poor. Read more

No parking. Pokey room

The web site suggested parking in road outside. None was available. After patrolling the area for 20 minutes I parked far away and carried my case for 10 minutes. If I had been able to park closer, the parking area was being closed at midnight for the weekend anyway for a local event. This should have been made clear at the time of booking.
The room was on the top floor. Very pokey. Poor natural light. Very stuffy. Tiny window. Mouldy mastic around shower. Shower fine. Breakfast basic but OK. Read more

Response

I am sorry for the issues that you had this weekend. The staff concerned have both been spoken too. The event in the town was an annual event ,attended by approx 500 people which was a far greater number than attended in previous years. This did create problems with parking in the town which is usual sufficient as there is a car park across the way from our hotel as well as on street parking. It also had an impact on noise throughout the neighbourhood but this is not a weekly occurance .

Likes?
Centrally located if you want to be in this area.
Dislikes?
No parking. Noise from events at hotel permeate everywhere. Located amongst pubs and eating places so can get noisy outside, too. Staff at breakfast moaned ad nauseam.

Description

Templars Hotel and Carvery building is steeped in history, having been built as a private house and maltings in the early 18th century, when Baldock was a favourite watering place on the main Great North Road from London to York. Subsequent owners included the Ind family, founders of the Ind Coope brewery company. Templars Hotel and Carvery is located in the heart of one of Hertfordshire's oldest towns, with the tourist sites of London and Cambridge all within easy reach. We are in the centre of the High Street with on street parking, bus stop and taxi rank outside the door. The train station is a 5 mins walk. Easy road and rail access to London 35 miles, Cambridge 22 miles, Luton Airport 15 miles & Stansted 26 miles. For those who like to walk we are ideally located to the town of Letchworth just 2 miles or a country walk to the villages of Ashwell or Weston. Many more within a short drive, park up and walk through some beautiful scenery of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Places of interest in the area include Duxford Imperial War Museum just 19 miles by road. Knebworth House & grounds are 7 miles away were concerts & open events are held in the summer months. Wimploe Hall is a national Trust property with house, gardens and a childrens petting farm 40 min drive along A10. We offer Carvery seven days a week along side our restaurant menu. Open to serve Breakfast until 12.00 noon every day and Carvery served at lunchtimes and in the evenings on Monday to Fridays and all day on Saturday and Sunday. Our country style accommodation is comfortable with ensuite bathrooms, Tea and Coffee making facilities, Free WiFi and includes a full English cooked breakfast. We have a courtyard seating area (weather permitting) and seating at the front of the Hotel for those who like to watch the world go by. Come and stay with us at Templars or dine in our restaurant and we will endeavour to provide a friendly service that you will remember and want to enjoy again.

Due to our property being a listed building the hotel has no disabled facilities,so cannot have an external or internal lift. In the restaurant however we do have a portable ramp that we can use on any of the steps and we are able to bring wheelchairs through our kitchen if they are too wide for the ramp and once inside it is all on one level. Although the disabled toilet is down two steps and we need to use the ramp for access.
