Room 8 - To be Avoided

Lovely Hotel, fantastic location, friendly and helpful staff. Stayed in Room 8 which is not fit for purpose as a bedroom, on the ground floor across from the main stair case and the breakfast room so lots of people passing by. Door to the outside car park against which the smoking area has been placed. Door behind one of the beds onto the corridor, further door into room 9. So noisy, not because people were being raucous just the location and numerous doors meant no soundproofing. Read more

Likes?
Good bed linens, towels, toiletries, friendly staff. Receptionist acknowledged there is a problem with room 8 & offered a discount & a 'nice' room upstairs if we came back.
Dislikes?
So noisy did not get a good nights sleep. Reception advised there have been problems with this room and that additional soundproofing has been added to the numerous doors but is ineffective.

Lovely building and superb location just inside Canterbury city walls

Had booked long in advance over the internet as we wanted to stay in Canterbury for a few nights after a business trip to Brighton. Had hoped for the lovely room in the annex we had had last time but this was not available and desk clerk demonstrated lack of flexibility in accommodating my wishes despite the fact I had booked weeks in advance. (Would strongly recommend trying to get the annex room if you can - shower facilities much better etc.) Read more

A truly wonderful place to stay

Just a one night stay, on a nice rainy day. Arrived mid afternoon, and were made welcome. And it carried on raining all the rest of the day, so we walked around the town in the rain. Found a nice tea shop, with nice cakes, and in the evening walked to a nearby restaurant, and had a nice meal. It stopped raining while we eating, so we walked back in the dry. I, my wife and three-year-old daughter stayed recently at the Castle House Hotel for twelve nights. We had a beautiful, high-ceilinged family room that was generously proportioned. Every staff member we encountered was helpful, friendly and kind, especially to our little girl who is extremely chatty. Nice hotel, it's a shame they stick families outside in a portacabin!

Why oh why have the Castle house moved families away from inside the hotel and stuck us outside in the corner of a car park? We were exposed to all the noise of passing traffic, the local car park and the local railway station. The interior is lovely and very plush, but you cannot escape the noise. We all certainly struggled to sleep, and the less said about the outside the better, suffice to say it's very ugly and certainly not inviting! Pleasant overall but with a few unfortunate let-downs.

When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly young girl who showed us to our room. The room was lovely but extemely cold. We politely complained about this to the girl who had greeted us but she seemed unwilling to help, disagreeing that it was cold, but saying she would phone her manager and ask what could be done. We returned from a meal a while later to find the room still freezing. We complained again and asked for extra blankets, which we were told would be brought to us, but they were not Read more

Clean and comfortable

Lovely hotel with original features. Did not like the walk across the corridor for the washing facilities although this was stated at the time of booking we did find it an inconvience, which would put us off booking again. Read more

mostly very good

Comfortable and homely rooms, however they really need to sort out the windows. It was a very windy night, the curtains moved, the noise made by the wind was aweful and kept us awake most of the night. The secondary glazing does not do its job due to poor fitting. Read more

pleasant & excellent service

We had a ground floor room in the adjudicate house. The room was very cozy and clean, as well as the bathroom. Although it was noisy (probably also due to the rather large open spaces on top and at the bottom of the door), we were not disturbed in the night (might be different depending on the other residents). Privacy is a bit limited. Staff are very friendly and helpful, breakfast is rely great, and the location is good to visit Canterbury (less than 10min to cathedral) Read more

The staff were fantastic!!!!!!

The staff at this hotel were fabulous. Because there were several of us staying for business purposes, at the castle opposite, we had quite a few unusual requests, which the hotel were more than happy to accomodate us with. As guests we were very hard work for them. Originally we were only supposed to stay for one night. However, we enjoyed the hotel so much we decided to stay on for one more night. Read more

Description

The Castle House is an architectural gem, built in the 1730s yet incorporating part of the Norman city walls, the Roman Worthgate and the only remaining section of the original town moat. Here, surrounded by Georgian opulence and decoration of the highest standard, you are just a few minutes short walk from the whole of the medieval city: the magnificent Cathedral; the maze of winding streets and the romantic ruins of the Castle and city walls… Book your room at the Castle and history and convenience will combine to make your stay both memorable and enjoyable. When you step inside the Castle House, you will be enraptured and ensnared by the relaxing and homely ambience. The rooms are generously proportioned, with high ceilings and large Georgian windows bathing you in light, many offering spectacular views of the Castle and the Great Cathedral itself. There is plenty of space to unwind… Most rooms are ensuite and all are decorated to the highest standards. Each provides for your every need including tea/coffee making equipment, tv. You will want for nothing to make your stay peaceful and trouble free. As well as the magnificence of your rooms, our comfortable residents lounge offers you a wonderful place to plan your day or unwind after a day’s sightseeing. Outside, our secluded private walled garden, containing the only remaining original section of the city’s once great moat, provides you with a pleasant place to reflect upon your day. Sleeping in Eighteenth Century rooms, astride a medieval wall, and with views over one of England’s most precious cities, you are staying in a special place. In the morning, your home-cooked breakfast is served in surely one of the grandest dining rooms in Kent. This is the Castle House experience you will remember again and again.

Please give us advance notice if you require a ground floor room as there is no lift access to the upstairs. There are minimal steps on the ground floor level. We have a ramp to access reception.
