Noise from upstairs

cold as the old windows didn't shut properly and let in a draft. Had to ask for the heating on but was turned off Sunday before we left. Woke up freezing. Noise from the room upstairs was atrocious. Could hear every step as floor creaked everywhere. We could actually hear them have a wee!!!! We could hear every word they said and they woke us at 3am having sex!! There is no insulation between the floor above and the ceiling in helga Maria. We wouldn't stay again. Read more

Quirky Rooms

We had an overnight stay in the Bagatelle room which is right at the top of the building. Although hard work to reach, the room was perfect for a short break. If we were staying longer than 2 nights we'd possibly reconsider and book one that's a little more spacious. Overall though we absolutely love the place and the food and staff are excellent! Excellent But

Seriously excellent location, service and character of hotel.
But the acoustics in the attic bedroom - Bagatelle room - mean that if the person below has the tv on you can follow every word - as loud as if in your room. Unfortunately this was until midnight and from 7am for us!!

Perfect Location With Cosy Rooms and Hearty Breakfast

We stayed here for 4 nights, the room we stayed in (Bagatelle) is not ideal for tall people as the bathroom door is quite low but we loved this as it really showed how old the building is! The staff were super friendly every time they saw us and the breakfast is well worth having, there is a lot of choice such as a full English or locally sourced Whitby kippers. The shower was powerful and our bed was comfy, not a fault what-so-ever. Read more

The hotel is located at the heart of Whitby, we could see the Abbey from our room. This was good as we could nip back after doing some shopping to dump our heavy bags!

Not that it bothered us, but a lot of door frames are quite low so if your a very tall person you may have to duck a fair bit.

Really good location

We came to The White Horse and Griffin to stay one night as we were attending a wedding. We were pleasant.y surprised to be able to check into our room early and very grateful with the help getting our cases up to the top floor where are room was. We had a reasonable nights sleep ( you can't help the wind, I know) and a great breakfast, with plenty of choice on the menu, served by friendly and attentive staff. Read more

The location of the hotel is excellent, right in the centre of Whitby. I liked the fact it was an old building and had a very quirky layout inside. The communal rooms and corridors were all nice too.

Very Disappointing

Very disappointed with our stay here- the bedroom was dark and dreary but looked nice on the website. The Bar was cold and not very inviting. The breakfast was very poor. I asked for a cheese and mushroom omelette as was offered on the menu. The girl said they are only available at weekends and as it was a Monday she would have to check. She said after checking that I could order one but when it came I couldn't eat it as it was totally bland greasy and rubbery I didn't bother sending it back. Read more

1 star accommodation with tired, inadequate furnishings and bathroom, but great service and location

Tried to be out of the room as much as possible. Hotel is great with great food, service and location, but paying this price you do not expect such a basic room with thin pillows, stained bedspread, mouldy bathroom and a hold yourself shower over the bath. Very creaky and noisy but we expected that having stayed here before. Either we had an awful room by comparison to 3 years ago or the place has gone downhill. Read more

A lovely relaxing stay in a gorgeous room, with a breakfast to die for!

We stayed for one night during half term and were particularly looking forward to seeing Whitby at Halloween and experiencing the Goth weekend again. I've always wanted to stay at The White Horse & Griffin. It looks inviting and I've heard great things about the food. We were not disappointed. The WH&G is right in the centre of old Whitby and deal for leisurely strolls around the town. Parking is just down the road and we wanted for nothing during our sure stay. The shower was a bit difficult to use, that is, there was only a hand shower, not a proper shower. We were also in need of an early departure, so breakfast being served only from 08.30 was a let down.

a very comfortable night in a wonderful historic inn

We registerd at the Whitehorse & Griffin in the afternoon and were shown to a lovely bedroom with original panelling and fireplace and creaking floorboards; we spent time exploring Whitby in fabulous sunshine and returned to the inn for showers (excellent by the way!) After some of Whitby's best fish'n'chips we had a great night's sleep in our historic surroundings and woke up to enjoy a delicious traditional breakfast in the lovely dining room of the inn. Historically interesting but disappointingly basic accommodation.

We enjoyed an evening meal in the restaurant and decided to book a room expecting this to be more upmarket than it actually was. We knew that there would be street noise, ie. street cleaners during early hours and noise from other residents moving around the old building, but it was the chipped paint, very dirty windows and painted 70s drawers that disappointed. Otherwise, food is good and staff are very friendly, and we understand that rooms are being updated, so I would recommend a stay. Read more

Excellent Stay

We booked the White Horse and Griffin at the last minute on the back of the many reviews we read. And they were not wrong the location is ideal with parking (6.00 for 24hrs) just along the road. Our room was in the attic right at the top and whilst the stairs into the room were a tad steep the room was just right for our stay.
We didn't eat in the restaurant as we were out with friends but the full English didn't disapoint. All in all a very enjoyable stay thankyou Read more

Nice room but very noisy - had to buy earplugs and this is off season!

Lovely old building, but the room was unstylish and noisy - you could hear through the walls and you could also hear the conversations of people outside the building. The cleaner hoovering the floor below of 8.15 on a Sunday morning was also unappreciated! For the price we paid, without breakfast it was poor value to be frank. You're paying for location. This was our first visit to Whitby and we stayed for two nights. We particularly wanted a property in the centre of Whitby and also one with a restaurant. The old part of Whitby is quaint and the buildings really interesting. The walk up 199 steps to the abbey was worth every step! We stayed in two rooms, Dickens and Wakeful. The bed in Dickens had a significant dip so wasn't very comfortable. The room was small. There was no shower. Wakeful was comfortable. No warm yorkshire welcome here

We arrived for a one night stay and waited to be seen to while the member of staff was on the phone - another couple were waiting ahead of us - eventually he told the caller he would have to go as he had people waiting. We were shown to our room and left there - no chat or conversation about how we were - where we had travelled from etc. The room described as cosy attic room was not suitable for 2 persons and was indeed dangerous and the mattress was sunken in the middle so no good nights kip. A short overnight stay in the old heart of Whitby in a unique building. Great room and bed, and an excellent breakfast. Charming Hotel in the Heart of Beautiful Whitby

I returned to The White Horse and Griffin for the third year running. Unfortunately, because of other commitments, I was only able to stay for one night this year; previously I have stayed for longer. The hotel is part of my enjoyment of my visits to the town. Daughters and a granddaughter joined me for dinner. This too has become an annual ritual. They are there for the Whitby Folk Festival; I am there simply for Whitby. Read more

An Interseting Experience

We booked for the 'Resolution Room' but when booking in they said that we could stay in 'Perkins Cottage'. This meant that we were in two bedroomed fishermans cottage up an alley facing a wall. The property was clearly very old and could have made a charming stay. The weather was warm so there was no problem with warmth or checking if the cottage was watertight, however there was a strong smell of damp and if there had been heavy rain we were sure it would have poured in through the front door. Rooms neglected, needs updating/decorating and stairs dangerous. Bedding linen torn/very old.

Very disappointing, hotel rooms run down, stairs dangerous, linen torn, tiles around bath broken/uneven, loud tumble dryer, duvet old and torn, fan in bathroom very dirty and not working (no window), cleaning and bed making not done one day. This is our 3rd visit in the past 10 years or so, but by far the worst. Standards have slipped and we were overcharged for what we got - poor value for money. Other residents were also complaining to the management. Shame, should have been a nice break. Read more

Enjoyable stay in a hotel that is full of character and very friendly

We stayed for three nights, the room was comfortable, the bathroom facilities were ok but the bath and shower was quirky and inadequate. This would not be true of other rooms, but the facilities in our bathroom frankly could be better. However, not a deal breaker - and better when you have worked out its foibles! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay this time, as in the past.

The Accomodation was apalling, Our room had the waste from the room above going through the room beside the bed, which is not pleasant. The room had a television but no network and could only be used to view Dvd,s. Extremely flattering photographs!

It took me a while to recognise the Warrior Princess room I had booked as the same one I walked in to. Some sort of wide-angle trickery or photo touch-up job sprang to mind!
At 7.30am, a steady drip drip started in the middle of the room: looking up, I saw a telltale 'this has happened before' plaster crack. By 8am, the drip had become a stream of water which I mopped up with towels. Read more

Brief visit to Whitby

We stayed in the Bagetelle double room(I cannot comment on any of the other rooms)it was quite small but adequate for a short stay. The hotel is very old so don't expect perfect decor, the en suite bathroom was clean but again it is an old room very high up in the loft space. I would describe it as quirky. This room is not for people who can't climb stairs it's a long way up and the staircase can be tricky in places. Read more

Location Perfect - The rest just average.

We had an enjoyable stay but never having stayed in pub style accommodation before we didn't know what to expect. We felt it was expensive for the standard of the room, but then it was an older style property with character. We paid extra for a double room with “double ensuite”, not sure what the double ensuite was all about apart from the fact the bath had 2 round ends and no shower? Check-in at 5.45pm with mother (83) and 2 small children. We soon discovered, which was no one's fault, that mum could not manage the 4 flights of stairs to her single room. The guy showing us round soon sorted us out with the only option available, that was a cottage down the rd (up an alley) that only had a set of stairs to climb. My Partner and I wanted somewhere to go to for one night for a short break and I'm so glad we chose Whitby. I booked the B&B the day before and it was ideal for what we needed. Worst Nights Sleep Ever!!

We stayed in the Mary Anne Hepworth room, described as luxury and romantic!! It might have been if it wasn't for the extremely noisy upstairs drain that ran through boxed in pipes in the room. Every time the toilets were flushed upstairs it woke us up - approx 9 times during the night!!! Nice location - Poor Hotel

The hotel is situated in a central location hence the downside is that there is no parking facility - you have to use a 'pay and display'.
Our room was situated on the third floor in the attic so you have to hump cases up a narrow staircase.
The ground floor is set up exclusively as a restaurant so if you are not eating you are not made to feel welcome.
There is no TV and the choice of DVDs is basic

Our hotel rooms, having been recently renovated still hold the charm and character of many centuries ago. All bedrooms are individually designed and ensuite. The restaurant and bistro offer exceptional cuisine, all prepared using fresh, seasonal local ingredients. Our speciality is based around the beautiful fresh seafood, brought into the town daily by the local fisherman. We also offer a wide range of meat and vegetarian dishes. Whitby is the home of Captain Cook and world-famous explorer William Scoresby. The hotel is only minutes away from 'Heartbeat Country' and several other national heritage sites. The town's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on the East Cliff. Spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the busy quayside. With unique old world charm, for centuries Whitby has provided a safe haven for shipping and fishing fleets. It was once the main whaling port for the North of England. The small fishing town of Whitby is part of the Heritage Coast of North East England. The town has a thriving holiday resort trade, bolstered by the recent arrival of the replica of Captain Cook's ship "HM Bark Endeavour".
