We stayed over new-years, enjoying the ambiance of this beautiful 16th century pub. Friendly faces all around and truly outstanding food, even if they do undermine their own business slightly by making the main courses so filling that you won't be ordering desserts. Very friendly staff showed us to the room. The 6 rooms are in what was originally the stable block outside the main pub. A downside was that our room was cold with a slight damp feel! however there was an electric heater which did heat the room making an improvement but not the best standard room compared to other rooms 1-5 that we noticed. The shower door was broken also, but overall it served it's purpose and was more than adequate. We stayed here overnight during a Ridgeway walk. It's a long walk down the hill but the building (and the whole village) is absolutely beautiful; The White Horse is a 16th centuary coaching Inn and looks every inch the part. It has a lovely clean, warm wood-clad bar or three, only slightly marred by a huge TV screen (removeable I think), and a lovely well-cared for back garden. This is a top class restuarant in a special pub but the hotel part of the operation is not so good. Read more

We did lots of driving out to various points: Weylon Smithy, Avebury, points along the Ridgeway, Oxford, and Blenheim Palace all easily accessible by car from the White Horse. Plenty to see and do around there. We both like the quiet of the country, loved the rolling downs and the horses on the gallops, and there were lots of places to walk. Great to know you enjoyed your stay here with us. We are very busy due to the location of the pub, everyone wants to come out on nice sunny days and see the 'White Horse'. The accommodation is detached to the side of the pub built in what were once old stables or garages. The bedroom is down stair, the walk in wardrobe and bathroom are up the stairs in the loft. The White Horse is one of Britain's oldest Inns and with its thatched roof, oak beams, log fires and warm welcome is probably one of its most beautiful, as well. Built in Elizabethan times, the pub itself is almost half a century old and is set in the olde worlde village of Woolstone, in the heart of the vale of Whitehorse; 11 miles from Swindon, 5 miles from Faringdon and 7 miles from Wantage. Popular with locals, tourists, and all those who love good food and good accommodation, the pub is perfect for those who enjoy walking and exploring the visual delights of the nearby White Horse Hill, the Ridgeway and other ancient monuments. The White Horse Inn in Woolstone is named after the monument on the nearby hillside of Uffington. Nobody knows for sure when the Uffington horse was cut, though the general belief now is that it is probably 2000 years old and possibly even older. The Ridgeway, which is possibly the oldest road in Europe, lies within easy reach of the inn. Stone Age man once walked along its route - not only long before the likes of Stonehenge came into being, but even before Britain was an island.
