A great place to stay

We spent several nights in the inn with my wife and we were happy throughout the whole stay - from clean and very pretty rooms (with easy to control heating) to great english breakfast that was provided. In the evenings, the quality of cooking was also very high as were the ales offered. Read more

A perfect get-away, quaint pub, outstanding food (and a few good ales)

We stayed over new-years, enjoying the ambiance of this beautiful 16th century pub. Friendly faces all around and truly outstanding food, even if they do undermine their own business slightly by making the main courses so filling that you won't be ordering desserts. They have a good wine list but we stuck to the real ales.

The party on new-years eve was a hog roast and a pub filled with locals. It was nice with a good old fashioned down-to-Earth party instead of having to dress up. Read more

Excellent hotel

The staff were very helpful, its a very quite area in the middle of nowhere, but was close to where i was training. Service was good & the Cleanliness was good too. My room was very nice. The bad points :- the TV was old, only standard channels 1-5 which is disapointing - WiFi was available with Excellent coverage inside the bar/pub area, but could not pick not signal in my room. Exactly how a B&B should be.

On a three day roadtrip around the countryside, we booked this inn VERY last minute. We arrived dirty from caving, and wet from the rain, to very friendly staff, and a gorgeous and clean room. Exceptional pub and evening food:average hotel facilities

We stayed here overnight during a Ridgeway walk. It's a long walk down the hill but the building (and the whole village) is absolutely beautiful; The White Horse is a 16th centuary coaching Inn and looks every inch the part. It has a lovely clean, warm wood-clad bar or three, only slightly marred by a huge TV screen (removeable I think), and a lovely well-cared for back garden. This is a top class restuarant in a special pub but the hotel part of the operation is not so good. Read more

Perfectly comfortable bare-boned week in deliciously quiet --and friendly-- location.

We did lots of driving out to various points: Weylon Smithy, Avebury, points along the Ridgeway, Oxford, and Blenheim Palace all easily accessible by car from the White Horse. Plenty to see and do around there. We both like the quiet of the country, loved the rolling downs and the horses on the gallops, and there were lots of places to walk. Beautiful scenery and lovely, small market towns within easy driving distance. Read more

Description

The White Horse is one of Britain's oldest Inns and with its thatched roof, oak beams, log fires and warm welcome is probably one of its most beautiful, as well. Built in Elizabethan times, the pub itself is almost half a century old and is set in the olde worlde village of Woolstone, in the heart of the vale of Whitehorse; 11 miles from Swindon, 5 miles from Faringdon and 7 miles from Wantage. Popular with locals, tourists, and all those who love good food and good accommodation, the pub is perfect for those who enjoy walking and exploring the visual delights of the nearby White Horse Hill, the Ridgeway and other ancient monuments. The White Horse Inn in Woolstone is named after the monument on the nearby hillside of Uffington. Nobody knows for sure when the Uffington horse was cut, though the general belief now is that it is probably 2000 years old and possibly even older. The Ridgeway, which is possibly the oldest road in Europe, lies within easy reach of the inn. Stone Age man once walked along its route - not only long before the likes of Stonehenge came into being, but even before Britain was an island.
