Landlady a "character" but sorry not for us.

Very disappointed in the cleanliness and standard of the guesthouse. We stayed for 2 nights as part of a longer trip to the North East. Thought the price was a bit steep compared to offers available on the internet etc and in hotel chains. Read more

Great value for an overnight stay in Whitley Bay to watch the panto at the Playhouse.

This was our second stay at The Cara. We received a great northern welcome from Carol, quick to advise us that there was a problem with the heating but a radiator had been put in our rooms (not needed i hasten to add). Spacious clean rooms. The bathrooms/showers were chilly and were a little shabby. Ample cooked breakfast was enough to set us up for the day, however i suspect the the sausages were not local farm produce as advertised on the web site. Read more

Ok, but not brilliant

We nearly went off to find another place to stay after we were kept waiting outside when we arrived for 25 minutes before being let in, this despite giving our time of arrival. It was a very cold night. We only stayed one night, and yes, we got off to a really bad start. The room was ok, but not ready for us - no heating on and the windows open! Showers were very difficult to get warm water in the morning. Breakfast was lovely and the staff really friendly, but unusual not be offered a choice. Read more

Could have easily been better

Booked a double room but we were given a family room which was cramped with three beds. No chair in the room. No bedside table or any other table. Only light was on the ceiling with switch at the door, so had to get out of bed to switch off. Could not access cupboard to hang clothes because of a bed in the way. Washbasin in the room but toilet and shower along the corridor. Room could have been cleaner. Did not appear to have been vacuumed recently. Read more

unhelpful

We arrived 9.30 pm as arranged beforehand. We let ourselves in with the key that was left for us, many thanks. Unfortunately the wooden curtain rail in bedroom fell on me as I tried to close the curtains. When we informed the landlady she was quite sharp even aggresive, and stated we must have pulled it really hard. 'I did not' I explained, being an antique restorer I do know about workmanship,it had been inadeqatly put up. Read more

Ok for the money we paid

Unfortunately the description for parking was abit misleading, we had to get a permit and my husband wasn't pleased about leaving hs car a couple of streets away. Had we have know this we wouldn't have booked. The lady who worked there was pretty abrupt , but not just with us. An older couple were complaining about their room at breakfast, she didn't take too kindly to this. It made a bad atmosphere in the breakfast room, so when I asked if I could have continental she was a little bit sharp. Read more

A quiet well run establishment which was in a great location.

Arrived late on Saturday and was welcomed immediately. Breakfast was planned for us as we were to make a very early start in the morning and breakfast was offered earlier than I believe would be the normal time. Friendly staff, excellent location but room was terrible

We had seen the Cara advertised on another website and the deluxe family room was all done in beige and lovely looking. We got a small room with hairs in the sink and the beds (not just head hair), when I closed the door a lump of dust fell down and the paint on the furniture was peeling off. The room was cold and the heater provided was not safe to use with a two year old about. The one wardrobe space was covered by a bed.The toilet also had hair and the sanitary bin was splashed. Breakfast had to be served by 7.30 am (but we appreciated the reason given,) and free overnight parking in the nearby public car park only until 9.0 am.(Not a problem if you're happy to get up early.)

The hotel was fit for purpose and I enjoyed the experience

I was working in Newcastle but didn't want to stay in the city as I enjoy the views of the sea etc. I found it a lovely hotel but the travelling from Newcastle was a little longer than I'd anticipated due to the Metro not running. Read more

I would have liked a morning newspaper and maybe more choice of television channels as they seemed to only have the 4 basic channels and the picture quality was pretty poor on two of them.

hassle free, friendly, comfortable, clean and nice brekky in the morning.

We live fairly nearby (approx 15 miles away) and had a wedding party at the nearby Boardwalk. We would've paid over half of our overnight stay on taxi journeys anyway, but we wanted a night away as the kids were being watched at home by an Aunty. Ahh peace and quiet for a night! We booked online, so when we arrived i just gave our name and were shown to our room. It wasnt a 5 star decor but it was clean, comfy and friendly with a lovely breakfast which is more important than looks in my eyes. Read more

First of all it was booked on location to the venue we were attending, all of 3 minutes walk. Own keys to front door and room door. it seemed like a nice family run guest-house

the only problem was not to do with the hotel itself, but the parking in the area. at 60p per hour, if we had not got other places to go to this would have worked out very expensive.

Superb position, comfortable stay and good breakfast.

The guest house was very easy to find and parking was readily available close by. We arrived late but after prior arrangement easily gained access to rooms. These were clean and comfortable, and after a good meal in a nearby restaurant spent a good nights sleep. The landlady was extremely friendly and soon provided a very tasty breakfast. Overall the stay was comfortable and the guest house was excellent value for money. Read more

glad to get back home after the break

We stayed in a ground floor room. Was woken at 1.30am as other guests came in and slammed doors behind them. Woken again at 2.30am with more doors banging, in the room next door someone used the shower - it sounded like they were using our en-suite. The free parking is also somewhat misleading - the local car park is only free of charge between 8pm and 9am, as breakfast is at 9am you have little option but to pay, obviously frustrating if you intend to not use the car during a stay also. Faulty towers revisited. Booked requesting a restful night b4 an important seminar & did not get it

It started well with being upgraded to a double room since they were full otherwise. The room is on the ground floor, which is right by the back terrace where the cook and a guest decided to chat loudly and smoke from 11:15pm for an hour. No double glazing, I could even smell the smoke in my room. Next, 2am loud banging and shouting on the back door, the receptionist managed to lock herself out. 5am guests walking through the corridor and banging doors. Breakfast just passable, no healthy option Read more

Satisfaction Guaranteed

I have stayed at 'The Cara' 4 or 5 times now and have never had any reservations about returning. It provides a good value alternative to city centre hotels in Newcastle which are generally more pricey and less pleasant. Very comfortable and convenient, I have always found it worth the 15-20 min drive from Newcastle. Read more

Warm and welcoming, something lacking behind the scenes though...

We were greeted warmly and shown to our rooms, which were comfortable and had everything we needed. However, it was clear that the shared bathrooms were not cleaned every day. We also found ourselves locked out of the breakfast room on the second morning (having given up the previous morning on getting a cooked breakfast after 30 mins of sitting waiting). A quick phone call sorted it out within 5 mins though. Maybe we were the 'once in a while' visitors to whom everything bad seems to happen... Read more
