Exeter is an attractive city in south Devon, with an impressive castle, beautiful Gothic cathedral and extensive city walls incorporating those of an earlier Roman fort. The city is a pleasure to explore and its position on the River Exe means that as well as the medieval city centre there is also a relaxed quayside to enjoy, with a mix of shops, pubs and restaurants. As well as the interest above ground, Exeter is unusual in having a network of tunnels under the surface too. These 14th century passages were built to carry lead pipes to bring fresh water to the city.
Exeter is also a great place to base yourself for a trip to the seaside at Exmouth or Dawlish, or to the rugged Dartmoor National Park. Whichever direction you head, you’ll be sure to find a comfortable Exeter B&B or hotel to return to after a day of exploring.
