Ilfracombe, on the north Devon coast, was once an important sea port. Although it still has a fishing fleet, it is now primarily a seaside destination popular with families. There are beaches, of course, the most interesting of which is Tunnels Beaches, where tunnels were carved by hand through the cliffs and lead to tidal bathing pools built in the 1820s.There is also an historic chapel thought to be the oldest lighthouse in the country and a number of art galleries. The town is also home to Verity, a sculpture by artist Damien Hirst. Standing 20 meters high, there is a good chance you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of it from your Ilfracombe hotel or B&B.
