Many events in Plymouth’s path established its fame as maritime city – Sir Francis Drake finishing his game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe before defeating the Spanish Armada, the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers to the New World in 1620 to the establishment of Devonport docks in the 1690s.
Now a vibrant waterfront city, Plymouth’s cobbled streets, boutique shops (and the oldest working distillery in England, making Plymouth Gin) make it an appealing destination for a visit steeped in history. Alternatively, Plymouth makes a good base for exploring Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley or as an overnight stop before taking the ferry to France or Spain.
And don’t forget to book your B&B in Plymouth for the annual British Fireworks Championships, a spectacular pyrotechnic display which takes place on two nights every August.
