Dorchester in Dorset is strongly associated with the author Thomas Hardy, who based many of his novels in and around the town. His former home, Max Gate, is open to the public. It is a pretty town, with a fascinating history. Close by is the massive Maiden Castle, an Iron Age hill fort that was one of the most powerful in Britain, and in the town there are Roman remains. Artefacts can be seen in the Dorset County Museum. ‘Hanging’ Judge Jeffreys once lodged in the town and you can find plenty of comfortable Dorchester hotels and B&Bs for your own lodgings.
