The Roman town of Colchester is said to be the oldest recorded town in Britain, based on a mention of it by Pliny the Elder in 77AD. It retains impressive Roman remains, including two Roman theatres and a large temple built into the later fabric of the massive Norman castle. The castle now houses the Castle Museum; adjacent is firstsite, a strikingly modern contemporary arts centre. Colchester Zoo is another popular visitor attraction. There are many hotels in Colchester to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the town.
