This attractive market town on the edge of the North York Moors National Park retains its well preserved motte and bailey castle, dating from the 11th century. It also has impressive and rare medieval wall paintings in its parish church, which were painted in 1450. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the second longest preserved railway in the country, runs from the town to Grosmont and Whitby and makes a great family day out. Welcoming Pickering B&Bs and inns make a great place to enjoy some Yorkshire hospitality, but book early for the annual Wartime and 1940s weekend.
