Sitting right on the border with Scotland, Berwick-upon-Tweed is the most northerly town in England – well, since 1482 at least. Before that, it regularly changed hands between the Kingdoms of England and Scotland as a result of regular border conflicts. It’s no wonder that the town has one of the first ever purpose-built barracks (from the early 18th century), remains of a medieval castle and impressive Elizabethan fortifications. There is a good selection of places to stay in Berwick and the town makes a good base from which to explore the beautiful Northumberland coast.
