The small Oxfordshire town of Wantage was the birthplace in 849 of King Alfred the Great, King of Wessex and England’s most powerful Saxon ruler. His statue stands in the market place in the centre of the town, surrounded by independent shops, cafés and pubs. The town lies close to the Ridgeway path and the beguiling Uffington White Horse is cut into the chalk of the hillside a few miles west of the town. B&Bs in Wantage and the surrounding villages offer you a warm welcome and chance to explore the ancient landscape of the area.
