Harlington Manor Information

Description

The house dates from the late 14th century and has a fascinating history. King Charles II stayed in the 1670s. Most famously, John Bunyan, the author of “Pilgrims Progress“ (still the third biggest selling book ever in the English language!) was interrogated and imprisoned here in 1660. The house was the property of the Burwell/Wingate families for approximately 470 years. All rooms have free toiletries, a Nespresso coffee machine and a kettle. Rooms have access to mini fridges with fresh milk. PLEASE NOTE-there are no televisions in the bedrooms. The King's Room is a 17th century time capsule. It has a dramatic crimson damask state bed, 17th and 18th century antiques, and the hugest bath imaginable! The Tabor Room has an Anglo-Indian 1850's four poster bed and ensuite bathroom, whilst the Garden Room (2/3 of a Tudor great chamber) has spectacular ceiling heights, a Regency four poster and a private (but not ensuite-please note!) bathroom. The Wainscot Room is pastel themed and cosy. It is fully panelled, partially with 16th century panelling. It has a private, BUT NOT AN EN-SUITE, bathroom. You are welcome to make use of one of the reception rooms to read and relax.

The house is over 600 years old. It oozes character. It is extraordinarily untouched by inappropriate modern development. Every room has beautiful period features, most of which are at least 300 years old. There is panelling of the highest quality in the Great and Little Parlours. Upstairs, the King’s Room and the Garden Room are extraordinary historical survivals. The Garden Room is a former Tudor great chamber, of which there are only a handful of similar examples in the UK. It was subdivided by the Georgians to create a bedroom and a corridor, but the Tudor magnificence is easily appreciated. The Kings Room, by contrast, was rebuilt in the 1670’s and almost every item of decoration dates from that time. The house is packed with antiques and quirky objects. There are artworks galore. We love greeting and chatting with our guests.

Directions

  • Train from Harlington Station (2.6 miles)
The station is about 200 m from the house. Walk up Station Approach and turn right towards the village. Keep walking until you get to the crossroads. Turn left at the crossroads and our entrance is 100 yards on the left. Walk up to the big metal gates and press the entryphone button. We will come to greet you.
  • Air from London Luton (13.9 miles)
On leaving the airport, take the bus marked Luton Parkway station. At the station, take trains going north to Bedford. Check that those trains stop at Harlington (nearly all of the trains do stop at Harlington). The journey time is 12 minutes. Get out at Harlington and then go up Station Approach. You will come to a junction. Turn right towards the village and keep going until you get to the crossroads in the centre of the village. Turn left and our entrance is 100 yards on the left. Walk up to the  big metal gates and press the entryphone button. We will come to greet you.
  • Road from M1 (1.0 miles)
Exit the motorway  at junction 12. Follow the signs for Flitwick. You will come to a roundabout. At that roundabout, follow the signs for Harlington and the railway station. Go past the railway station and about 200 yards later you will come to a crossroads. Turn left at the crossroads and our entrance is first on the left. Drive up to the metal gates and press the entryphone button.  We will then come to greet you.
