St Marks Stays Information

Description

Joanne and Damian, who are your live in hosts, have opened up their home at St Marks Stays for groups and retreats. We are about creating a sociable experience that brings people together in the stunning location of the Yorkshire Dales and in close proximity to the Lake District. With the perfect combination of facilities, space and location, St Marks Stays is for groups and retreats, is self-catering and pet friendly. We want you to feel a part of our home with the addition of lots of space to take time out on your own. There are six ensuite rooms and two bedrooms that share a bathroom. Five rooms can be made up as twin, or double beds on request. One room has a bunkbed . This changes to just a double bed 2nd April 2024. All ensuites have showers and one has a bath. The shared bathroom has a bath with a shower over it. The kitchen is the new heart of the home and that’s how we want you to feel at St Marks Stays. Our kitchen is perfect for your self-catering requirements where you can cook together, or have a chef, or caterers come in to create delicious food for you. We provide tea & coffee, seasonings & oils and kitchen equipment so you can cook on the gas hob, electric oven, or learn to use our Aga. Our fabulous dining space is perfect for dinner parties, with large windows and patio doors offering awesome views across the hillside. There are two lounges, a real fire in one of them and a studio space that is perfect for all kinds of retreats, be it yoga, art, or business. If you don't fancy venturing out into the surrounding countryside, then just sit back in our fabulous garden, listen to the river and enjoy the views from the comfort of the patio. Lets face it, we're right in the heart of the countryside so you can enjoy your chosen tipple, have a BBQ and then watch the sun go down over the beautiful Howgill Fells, staying warm in the evening around the fire pit and gaze up at the stars due to there being no light pollution.

We will be around as live in hosts, but we have our private living area tucked away at the end section of the house next to the studio along with our cocker spaniel. Don't worry though as we are very friendly and leave you in peace if you don't need us around. We can mix and socialise with you as much, or as little as feels right. We are on hand however to help make your stay right for you, so if there is anything special you need organising, you only need to ask. It all started back in 2014 for us with a work sabbatical from our careers in architecture and photography to volunteer with Raleigh International overseas in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We realised life should be about connecting with others, getting outdoors and really living life. Our Raleigh Expedition and love of travelling led us to creating a home to share with others. We want to host a house that everybody gets involved in. There is nothing better for the soul than being part of a group of like minded people and going back to the good old days of chatting, learning from others, discovering the world from somebody else’s point of view and having fun together. Arrive as strangers, leave as friends.

Accessibility

All bedrooms are on the first floor, accessed via a large easy going staircase with handrail on one side.

Directions

  • Road from M6 Junction 37 (7.8 miles)
Follow signs to Sedbergh along the A684, crossing over at one point a narrow bridge. Continue through the town, following the A683. Continue for approximately 3 miles and St Marks Stays is on the left just before St Marks Church which you will see on the right. If you go past the church you have gone too far and can turn around in the parking lay by. Please do not turn up the farm track and ensure everyone in your group gets these directions and does not just rely on SatNav.
  • Road from From the A1 - A66 (25.0 miles)

Follow the A686 towards Kirkby Stephen, continuing straight through the town itself. After approximately 1.5 miles after leaving Kirkby Stephen, turn left on the A683 signposted Sedbergh. Continue on this windy road through some beautiful scenery, passing the Fat Lamb Pub and the Cross Keys Inn until you reach Cautley. St Marks Stays is on the right immediately after St Marks church on the left. Please do not turn up the farm track and ensure everyone in your group gets these directions and does not just rely on SatNav.

  • Train from Oxenholme Station (25.0 miles)
The nearest mainline train station to St Marks Stays is Oxenholme Station just outside Kendal. St Marks Stays is about 25 miles from the station. We recommend booking taxis if required and we can send a list.
