Bridge House Information

Description

Bridge House, originally built in the 1850’s has been offering food, refreshment and a place to stay for over a century. Known as “The Cyclists Rest” at one time, it was a Temperance Hotel. Now Bridge House is licensed and also serves coffee and lunch during the day.The house has been completely refurbished and offers 3 very comfortable ensuite bedrooms which have been tastefully furnished with quality fittings to provide modern comforts while retaining the traditional feel of the lovely old building. Our beautiful king sized cast iron beds are handmade in Cornwall and the comfortable mattresses are British made. To ensure you have a good nights’ sleep, our individually handcrafted wool Devon duvets keep you warm in winter and cool in summer and are naturally breathable. Each room has a smart TV, free Wi Fi, USB socket, hairdryer and freshly ground coffee and tea making facilities. Bramley handmade bath products add a touch of luxury in the bathrooms. For breakfast we serve quality local produce, homemade bread and preserves.Nigel & Caroline, the owners offer a warm welcome and like to create a relaxed atmosphere. We have a cosy front parlour with a wood burner in winter where you can sit and read the papers and a lovely walled garden to relax in when the sun is shining.Bridge House is in the village of Bampton which is situated on the edge of the Exmoor National Park and in the beautiful Exe Valley. The village has a good choice of shops, 3 pubs, a restaurant and cafes. With one of the local pubs serving award winning food and other great eating places a short drive away, this is an excellent base for a short break. Bampton is easily accessible by car, the M5 being a short drive away and Tiverton Parkway railway station is just 11 miles away. The area is popular for walking and cycling and also fishing and shooting. Ideally situated for exploring Exmoor and the stunning North Devon coast. The cathedral city of Exeter is only a 40 minute drive away.

Nigel and Caroline both grew up in the Devon countryside, Caroline not far from Bampton and Nigel near Dartmoor. Having met while working at Exeter Cathedral Restaurant, then running the very popular “Avocet Café” in Topsham they were looking for a new challenge. Seeking a move to a more rural setting, they bought the then “Bridge House Hotel” in 2013 and after quite an extensive refurbishment opened as “Bridge House” for their “proper good food”. After continued work on the 250 year old building the 3 ensuite rooms were ready for guests. Bampton is the perfect place with good independent shops, great eating places and a great community spirit. Nigel is the chef and Caroline looks after the front of house and believe that the personal touch is at the heart of their business, creating a relaxed atmosphere for their guests. “We both love to make the most of ingredients in season at their best and enjoy foraging in the local countryside. We knew Bridge House had great potential and the work on the property has certainly been a labour of love, but definitely worth it now we have three comfortable, stylish, ensuite bedrooms in keeping with the character of our lovely 1850's home.
