Bickleigh Castle Hotel Information

Description

Bickleigh Castle offers guest accommodation with 17 bedrooms in our thatched courtyard cottages. We also offer a beautiful Tudor Bridal Suite in the Castle itself, with private Bathroom. All rooms are tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard, with tea & coffee making facilities, TVs & wifi. Continental breakfast is included in the tariff; cooked options extra. Hair dryers are available to borrow from Reception and are not kept in the rooms. The range of rooms can be booked through the Castle's website under 'Staycations and B&B' or one of the linked agencies (e.g. Hotels.com) BUT for Family Suites (2 bedrooms + bathroom) you have to email or phone the office to book. Bickleigh Castle has gardens and large grounds, much suited to people who like 'the great outdoors'. We have a hard Tennis Court (for year-round use), croquet lawn, outdoor hot-tub (April - October w.p.), outdoor sitting areas and fly-fishing on the River Exe. The Exe is suitable for kayaking, rafting and wild swimming. Our lane is suitable for cycling, walking and jogging. It goes to the village of Thorverton (five miles) with two pubs and a bus service to get you back to the Castle! We have Tennis kit we can lend to guests. Indoor facilities include a large and comfortable guests' sitting room (available 24 hrs) and the dining room. We can set up a movie night (big screen) for large groups staying, given good notice. As well as the TV and Wifi in the sitting room, there are also some games and puzzles. We are in a conservation area, in a beautiful valley, hence the area is abundant in wildlife. There are many varieties of birds and other creatures. We offer to our resident guests a free guided tour of the Castle. The Castle itself dates back to Norman times and has a very fascinating history. There is a charge of £8 per adult for non-resident visitors but we operate the access scheme for Historic Houses members. There is plenty of free parking for all visitors.

From the Norman Period until just after World War 1, the Castle belonged successively to the de Redvers, Courtenay and Carew families, these families being linked by marriage or other relationship. Since 1924 the Castle has had several owners, the current having owned the Estate since 2003. Although initially hosting Weddings only, the Castle now hosts, additionally, B&B., House Parties, Conferences and a variety of other special events upon request. Bickleigh Castle is a unique venue in a beautiful setting. Our present owners are classic car 'buffs' so any visits by classic car clubs are especially welcome. We run with a small, friendly staff, amongst whom we have Marie our Wedding Coordinator, John (Curator) who administers non-wedding events including Castle Tours and B&B, and Barbara, Monika and her team who look after the accommodation and breakfasts, and (other) Monika, Peter and Dave who do a great job looking after the gardens. As a family-run venue, we are family friendly and welcome children of all ages.
