Bagshawes, ie. 38 Flowergate, has had an interesting history. Prior to the 1700’s little is known, although certain architectural features would date the original building back to the 1500’s. In the late C18 it is said to have been donated to the town by the Chomleys of Whitby Hall to be used as a court house.
That use was short lived if the deeds are correct, which indicates that it had become a tenement home of several families. In 1853 Solicitors (Seaton Gray and Pannett) established their business finally becoming “Seaton Gray, Bell and Bagshawe. Mr Bagshawe celebrated his 60 years as a solicitor in 1990 – hence the name . In 2002 the business closed down - missing its’ 150 years by a few months – and the building was acquired by the current owners.
After painstaking refurbishment and renovations (winning awards from the town’s Civic Society and from Scarborough Borough Council) tea rooms were opened up on the ground floor, with domestic accommodation above. That operation was closed down in 2009 and several years later, with the appropriate approvals, conversion took place to create the current house.
The owners offer deluxe Bed and Breakfast , using just three of the building’s many bedrooms.
The rooms (two superior – “Parchment” and “Quill” and one standard –“ Deed”) come with all the expected facilities, en-suite, tv’s, courtesy stations, fridges etc. “Parchment” and “Quill” have the use of the building’s car spaces – one each – and “Deed” is provided with scratch cards for use with the town residents parking scheme on West Cliff.
Bagshawe’s location, in the very centre of town, surrounded by the shops, bars, restaurants and attractions means that it is only a matter of yards, during the day, for guests to get “back to base”and no long walks late at night.
