The Hood Arms Information

Description

The Hood Arms is an historic 17th Century coaching inn situated in the village of Kilve on the edge of the Quantock Hills. The inn is steeped in history, being on the route of the Coleridge Way and close to the Jurassic coastline and beaches of Somerset, halfway between Bridgwater and Minehead and very accessible for Taunton, or as a base to explore Exmoor. Our newly refurbished accommodation is superbly appointed and features a number of superking, king, double and twin rooms. Our menu features fresh, locally sourced seasonal produce and we have a different Specials board every day. For our business guests, we are a short drive along the coast from the new Hinkley Point C development and can provide you with a comfortable home from home whilst you are working in the area. The Hood Arms has a long, rich history with an Inn being recorded on the site as far back as 1689 – the year that William and Mary replaced James II as co-monarchs of England. The inn was originally called the Chough & Anchor but by 1832 it had been renamed The Hood Arms, although the original pub sign was retained and is still used to this day, the chough and anchor being the crest of the local landowners, the Acland-Hood family of St Audries. By the end of the 1830’s the pub was flourishing and stables were added in 1839 to attract the growing coaching trade travelling along the Nether Stowey to Minehead turnpike. The classic layout of the Hood Arms remains largely unchanged since 1736 and its easy to relax by the open fire with a pint of Cider or Real Ale and imagine those times, when Kilve was a centre for smuggling along the Bristol Channel coast – with Brandy and illicit goods stored the Chantry situated behind the Hood Arms in Sea Lane; or you might have shared a tall tale with Coleridge or Wordsworth as they enjoyed a hearty meal in the pub. Please note if you’d prefer to book directly with us please contact us via our website, by email or telephone us on 01278 741114

We are a local, family run business who believe in what we do and in doing it well. The team is made up of two families who have been friends for many years and share an obsession for pubs. The quality of our food and accommodation, together with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere is at the centre of everything we do at The Hood Arms. We have over 25 years of pub and restaurant experience and are committed to offering one of Somersets best pub experiences whether you drinking, eating or staying with us. We offer a modern British menu and our chefs source ingredients and produce from local suppliers wherever possible. We regularly serve local game, fresh fish, the finest local meats and we always endeavour to have a variety of vegetarian options available. Our seasonal menu is full of tasty, simple and hearty dishes and changes regularly. We also have a daily Specials Board sourced locally. Everything we serve is freshly prepared by our head chef and dedicated team. The Hood is a 17th Century Coaching Inn fully of history, character and tradition waiting to offer you one of Somerset's warmest and finest welcome! We have some dog friendly rooms.
